The Milwaukee Depot at Morton Washington

Last updated: January 2007

The Morton Depot was moved from the grounds of the Tubafor Mill up the road to a location more convenient to downtown Morton in 2005. The move was documented in an episode of The History Channel's series Mega Movers.

First steam train to Morton! Rail service is finally restored to Morton! On October 10, 2003, The Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad ran steam locomotive #17 and three coaches on a pilot run to Morton from Mineral. The first public train was a week later on the 19th.

One thing that may be unique about this depot is that it still sits in its original location, in its original paint, just as it was the day the Milwaukee pulled out. Of it's brethren, most that I've been told of have been dismantled, moved, and/or changed in appearance and function. However, there are plans to relocate it to a more suitable location, that is not in the Tubafor Mill's loading yard.

The Cowlitz River Valley Historical Society has set up a Morton Depot website with information and historical photos. However I appreciate any and all news and information. Please send me email at:

I was able to follow the spur that crosses the street and heads south for about 2 miles. The last positive evidence for it is its being paved over under Skaggs Road. The tracks are in very derelict condition and obliterated by mill waste and vegetation, south of town. I have no idea if the spur will be returned to service or not.

The following photos were taken in January 2001.
