Density guage

A density gauge uses ionizing radiation to measure the moisture content and density of the soil. A long probe is inserted into the soil using a hole that was created by driving and withdrawing a steel shaft into the freshly compacted material. To be acceptable, the level of compaction must be 95% or more. Poor compaction may cause future settlement that can damage buildings and break pipes. It\'s trickier than it seems! If there is not enough moisture in the fill, it won\'t compact. If there is too much moisture in the fill, it displaces material also preventing proper compaction.
