Hydraulic tie spacer

Its purpose is to space the ties. The distance between ties is an important element in automating track work. When sections (small handful of workers responsible for 6 - 12 miles of track) transitioned to work gangs (crews of dozens or even a 100 or more workers responsible for a specific job such as changing out 50 miles of rail) it was important to ensure consistent spacing of the ties. This machine accomplished that feat.

A Detroit 3-53 diesel powers a hydraulic pump. The pressurized hydraulic fluid is used for propulsion and to power hydraulic cylinders that push and pull the ties into a consistent spacing.
